Shimano’s new SPD-SLR road pedal system promises lower stack height, reduced weight and improved performance but breaks compatibility with more than 23 years of SPD-SL pedals and cleats. In this review, I examine the new pedals, cleats and shoes, the complicated upgrade path, and whether these marginal gains are really worth starting over.
