Garmin’s long-awaited EDGE 550 and EDGE 850 bike computers have finally landed, bringing the brilliant transmissive LCD screen from the 1050, a faster processor, updated UI, and a handful of new features for both road and MTB riders. The 850 steps even closer to the flagship with a speaker, Garmin Pay, and expanded storage, while both units benefit from Trailforks integration, gear ratio analysis, and improved MTB-specific profiles. But alongside the impressive hardware and feature set come two big surprises: a sharp jump in pricing over the previous generation, and a battery life spec of just 12 hours of “demanding use” – a figure that’s well below Garmin’s own recent benchmarks.

Would you recommend getting an edge 540 solar on sale at $250 us over the 550 at full retail price at this point?
