Power Meter Pedals: Favero Assioma // Xpedo SPD Hack // Gravel Power!

Converting a set of Favero Assioma DUO power meter pedals into Shimano SPD compatible pedals for off-road/gravel grinding is possible! This is one of the best unofficial and warranty voiding hacks I’ve seen. In this video I cover the process from A to Z – including modification of my MTB shoes to ensure they have correct clearance from the Assioma pod.

  1. This seems so straight forward, so why is the manufacturer not doing this as an option?! It would seem that being the first one with an spd power meter on the market would result in major $$$$.

    1. I just got the stuff for the hack, having worked in product development as a career, the only thing that makes sense is they don’t feel comfortable telling people they may need to grind out part of their shoe to clear the power components. Probably lawyers put the stop on it.

      1. I wonder if you wouldn’t need to hack your shoes if you got some road shoes that have the SPD cleat holes, such as the Pearl Izumi Attack

  2. That makes sense. Thanks. This whole gravel push has such momentum that I just keep expecting a whole line of gravel related power gear, including pedals, and i keep being surprised at the lack of product.

  3. Hi,
Would this work as well with Cranbrothers Candy or Eggbeater pedals for housing? I’m using those on my gravel bike and would love to go for power upgrade…

  4. Has anyone come up with a list of Xpedo pedals that work with this conversion? I know the M4, M8 and CXR but they are difficult to find here in the UK. What about the M3 and the M4-CR etc?

  5. IMHO Favero does not sell them as they would be incompatible with most shoes (how many would have the skill and will of modifying a new pair of shoes such that to have the right clearance with the pod?). I suspect most would return the pedals with lots of complaints…

  6. Is it possible to convert them into clipless flatpedals, for MTB?
Or, even better, do this with Garmin Vector3 pedals that I already have?

  7. I did the conversion 8 months back and have a pair of Diadora MTB shoes and didn’t even have to make any adjustments to the shoes. I did find that the pedal body screw kept slow unscrewing itself so every 2 rides I had to open-up the end-cap and tighten it down again. I fixed that with some loctite and it has since worked flawlessly.

    1. Hi!, Funny you mention this. I did the conversion about a year ago and yesterday noticed that the pedal body was loose. Are you talking about the screw on the shaft where the spring is?

  8. I have done the conversation with xpedo baldwin pedals. I had to remove the seal next to the pod due to binding but it works and spins free.

  9. Hi
I’ve just tried with wellgo W01 and favero assioma works well!! Used with my SIDI no modification of shoes done!

Impossibile to buy Xpedo Force 4, is it possible to use expedo force 3? and exustar o ritchey?

    Thanks
    Ernesto

    1. Hello Ernesto,

I’m looking into converting my favero assioma to SPD with wellgo W01 pedals since these are the only one mentioned here I could find available in the market (Xpedo are hard to find). Is there anything to be considered when mounting the pedals? any tip will be more than welcome.

      Thanks!
      Federico.

  10. The Xpedo Force 4 are now unavailable. You can use the Xpedo Force 3, but the Xpedo inner bearing is 12mm whereas the Assioma inner bearing is 10mm so you need to insert a plain bearing / bushing to prevent the SPD pedal body from rocking on the outer bearing & wearing it out prematurely. Fortunately this is easy peasy. Buy the uxcell Sleeve Bearing 10mm Bore x 12mm OD x 8mm Length Plain Bearings Wrapped Oilless Bushings Pack of 10 from Amazon. You get 10 of them for $6 including shipping & you only need 2, but you can share the other 8 with your friends. The other downside is that you can’t put the old Assioma Road pedals onto the Xpedo shafts to create a pair of road pedals for your mates.

  11. Hi all
Are the Bontrager pedals being used within this group? feedback etc.

Any suggestions on pedals that work that are available as of July 2021
Not super keen on the bushing idea.
    Cheers

      1. Hi GPLama

Curious if you are aware if this actually works? These appear to be the only pedal body out there that isn’t sold out as easily accessible. Maybe another potential video for all of us 😉

        Regards
        Dan

  12. Hi everyone, does the conversion of assioma favero pedals to mtb work with all xpedo bodies or only some xpedo models? (Would the conversion work with xpedo baldwin trail for example?)
